Why is my furnace blowing cold air?
Start with the controls
Cool air at a vent does not identify a failed part. A furnace may circulate room-temperature air before or after a heating cycle, or whenever the thermostat fan is set to On. If there is no gas odor, smoke or carbon monoxide alarm, check that the thermostat is in Heat mode and set above the room temperature. Select Auto for the fan and allow the normal startup time described in your owner’s manual.
Look for a simple airflow problem
Check the filter only if its normal homeowner access is safe and easy to reach. Turn the system off before removing it, follow the equipment manual, and replace a dirty disposable filter with the specified size and type. Keep supply registers and return grilles clear of furniture. Do not remove burner or electrical covers. If accessing the filter exposes wiring, requires tools for a service panel or feels unsafe, leave that task to a technician.
Know when to stop
If the furnace keeps sending cold air, repeatedly starts and stops, or shows an error code, arrange service. Write down the code without opening the cabinet. Ignition failures, restricted venting, overheating and other faults can look similar from the living room. Repeatedly cycling the power can hide information the technician needs and does not resolve the cause. Never bypass a door switch, limit switch or other safety control to keep the heat running.
Leave combustion repairs to a pro
A licensed HVAC professional should diagnose gas supply, ignition, burners, heat exchangers and electrical faults. Do not relight a pilot or adjust a gas valve using a general internet checklist. If you smell gas, leave immediately without operating switches or using a phone inside, then call 911 and your gas utility from a safe location. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call emergency services. Do not wait for an online answer.
Prepare for the service visit
Tell the technician when the problem started, what the thermostat displays, whether any rooms still warm up, and when the filter was last changed. Keep pets and stored items away from the work area. If the home is becoming dangerously cold, move vulnerable people somewhere safe. Never use an oven, grill or outdoor fuel-burning heater to heat the home while you wait.
Common follow-up questions
Can the fan setting cause cool air?
Yes. On can circulate room-temperature air between heating cycles. Auto is a useful safe check, but persistent loss of heat still needs service.
Should I keep resetting the furnace?
No. Repeated resets can conceal fault information and leave the cause unresolved. Record any displayed code and call a licensed HVAC technician.
