Why is my AC not cooling?
Check what the thermostat is asking for
An AC that runs without cooling may have a control, airflow or equipment problem. Start with observations rather than guessing which part has failed. With no smoke, burning smell or other hazard present, confirm Cool mode and a set temperature below the room temperature. Check the schedule and any temporary hold. If the fan is On, it may move air even when the cooling equipment is not actively running.
Check accessible airflow
Turn the system off before checking a safely accessible homeowner filter. Use the replacement type and size specified by the equipment manufacturer. A visibly dirty filter deserves attention, but changing it does not prove the whole system is healthy. Open normal supply registers and keep return grilles clear. From a safe distance outside, note whether leaves or stored objects crowd the outdoor unit. Do not reach through its grille, remove covers or wash electrical components.
Stop for ice or electrical warning signs
If you see ice on accessible tubing or the indoor unit, stop cooling and call for advice from a licensed technician. If the area is dry and there are no electrical warning signs, you can run the fan only (Fan On, cooling Off) to help it thaw while you wait. Do not chip the ice, apply heat or keep forcing the compressor to run. Leave melting water and electrical hazards to a professional. A buzzing unit, burning smell, damaged wire or repeated breaker trip also needs service. Do not open electrical panels, test capacitors or repeatedly reset breakers as a troubleshooting routine.
Do not assume it needs refrigerant
Poor cooling can have several causes, and a vent reading alone cannot tell you whether refrigerant is low. Refrigerant work belongs to a properly certified technician; do not connect gauges, add a can of refrigerant or use leak-seal products yourself. Ask the service company to identify the cause and explain the recommended repair before authorizing work. A photo or online conversation cannot replace measurements and an equipment inspection.
Make the call useful
Record whether cooling stopped suddenly or faded over time, which rooms are affected, and what the thermostat shows. Share the model number if you already have it safely available. If the house is getting dangerously hot, move people and pets to a cooler safe place rather than waiting beside a malfunctioning system. When the simple checks do not restore cooling, leave it off and schedule professional service.
Common follow-up questions
Can a dirty filter reduce cooling?
Yes. A restricted filter can reduce airflow. Replace it only through safe homeowner access using the manufacturer’s specified type, and call for service if cooling does not return.
Can I add refrigerant myself?
No. Have an appropriately certified HVAC technician diagnose the system and handle refrigerant work. Poor cooling alone does not establish a refrigerant shortage.
